THREE Ayrshire sides from the West of Scotland Football League (WoSFL) remain in the hunt for one of the biggest trophies available to them.

It comes after 14 sides earned progress through into the last 16 of the South Challenge Cup on Saturday, November 16.

Featuring teams from across the West, East and South leagues, as well as the Lowland League - the competition can be viewed as the biggest available to non-league clubs in Scotland.

Only one WoSFL side has got its name on the roll of honour since the league was formed - with that club still in the mix to earn a second title.

Auchinleck Talbot were one of two Ayrshire sides to secure a place in the last 16, after a hard fought win over Cumbernauld United.

Connor Boyd scored the only goal to secure a place in the next stage for Tommy Sloan's side, who won the match 1-0.

Joining them in the latter stages will be rivals Cumnock Juniors, who upset the odds to make the round of 16.

Despite battling an injury crisis, Stephen Swift's men battled to a 1-1 draw with fellow Premier Division outfit Drumchapel United who have been in fine form all year.

The teams could not be separated in extra-time, meaning the match went to penalties, with Cumnock winning the shootout 4-2.

However, it wasn't a success story for every Ayrshire side who played in the last 32 this weekend.

Troon FC came crashing out of the competition on Saturday, with First Division leaders Arthurlie earning a 2-1 win at Portland Park to knock the Seasiders out.

It was also the end of the road for Irvine Meadow who faced familiar foes in Lowland League side Civil Service Strollers - who Ben Carson's side knocked out of the Scottish Cup last month.

However, history would not repeat itself and Gary Jardine's side got their revenge with a 3-1 win.

The last Ayrshire club to fall was Hurlford United, who played out a thrilling fixture away at St Andrews United.

A last minute goal from the home side saw the match end 3-3 in regulation time, and they would carry their momentum on into extra-time - winning the tie 5-3.

The final Ayrshire club still in the tournament is Kilwinning Rangers, who are yet to play their last 32 match.

They found out on Saturday that they will be facing Shotts Bon Accord away from home for a spot in the last 16 - with the match to be played on Saturday, November 23.

Outside of the South Challenge Cup, a number of Ayrshire sides had vital league matches taking place.

In the Premier Division, bottom placed Darvel upset the form guide to earn a 1-1 draw at home to second placed Johnstone Burgh - though remain three points adrift in last place.

In the First Division, after their first defeat in nine matches last weekend, Kilbirnie Ladeside earned a solid point at home to Maybole in an all Ayrshire clash.

The match ended 1-1 and keeps the Garnock Valley side in mid-table, while Maybole remain three points back of the promotion places.

In the Second Division, Craigmark Burntonians remain cemented to the foot of the table after a 1-0 defeat at home to Bellshill Athletic.

As the season approaches the halfway stage, Craigmark are 10 points from safety.

In the Third Division, Lugar Boswell Thistle continue to adjust well to life in the league following promotion last season.

Despite a 1-1 draw with bottom side Wishaw on Saturday, they are well place in mid-table with nearly half of league matches played so far this season.

It was a frustrating weekend for both Irvine Victoria and Girvan, who met in a battle of sides struggling at the bottom end of the table this season.

Both clubs, who occupy relegation places, had a chance to edge closer to safety however a 1-1 draw means the pair remain in the drop zone.

Girvan will be the happier of the two with the result, having levelled the match in the dying moments.

It was an even more frustrating weekend for Ardeer Thistle, who could have climbed into the promotion place with a win away at Glasgow University on Saturday.

However, a high-scoring 5-3 loss keeps Sean Kenney's side in fourth place ahead of a tough test against Threave Rovers this coming weekend.

Finally, in the Fourth Division, Eglinton FC saw their good run of form come to an end away at Port Glasgow.

The Kilwinning side had been making good ground on the promotion places before a 4-1 loss against the club currently in second place.

Still with a game in hand, Eglinton are six points back of the top three.
