THE weekend's football action featuring Ayrshire's West of Scotland Football League (WoSFL) sides had a little bit of everything.

From thrilling cup action to top of the table clashes, teams from across the county were involved in some massive fixtures.

The large majority of games on Saturday, October 12, took place in the South Challenge Cup - arguably the biggest trophy on offer.

Featuring every non-league side across the country, a number of Ayrshire teams are still vying for the title.

Winners in 2022, Auchinleck Talbot are still in the running for a second title this season.

They booked their spot in the fourth round of the competition on Saturday with a superb display earning Tommy Sloan's side a 3-0 win over Jeanfield Swifts.

While fellow East Ayrshire outfit Cumnock Juniors put their recent cup disappointments behind them - having crashed out of both the senior and junior Scottish Cups in recent weeks.

They earned a place in the competition's next stage with a hard fought 2-1 win at home to Lochore Welfare.

Dalry Juniors have become accustomed to cup shocks in recent seasons, but were unable to produce that same magic again at the weekend.

The Third Division outfit faced a tough task against Lowland League side Civil Service Strollers, and it was the away side who claimed a 3-0 victory at Merksworth Park.

Also out to cause a shock was Eglinton FC, with the Kilwinning side also facing Lowland League opposition in Bo'ness United.

Despite being five divisions below their opposition, it took until the 90th minute for the deadlock to be broken - and it was agony for Eglinton who lost 1-0 due to the last minute strike.

While there was one major shock in the third round, coming at Gasworks Park where Larkhall Thistle hosted Beith Juniors.

Beith went behind twice in the match though levelled each time - with the score tied at 2-2 when the full time whistle blew.

It was then straight to penalties with the Second Division outfit pulling off the upset as they won via spot kicks to knock the Premier Division champions out.

Lugar Boswell Thistle were also eyeing a shock as they hosted Premier Division side Hurlford United.

An upset was on the cards as Hurlford were handed a fourth minute red card, and were 2-0 down after 14 minutes.

However, the top league side came back in the final hour of the match and ran out 4-2 winners to earn a spot in round four.

Fellow East Ayrshire side Darvel had their hopes of joining Hurflord in the fourth round dashed following a thrilling encounter against Pollok.

The sides couldn't be separated within 90 minutes, with the match ending 3-3, though it was Pollok who triumphed when the match went to penalties.

Troon continued their impressive start to the season as they earned a spot in the next round.

They travelled to face St Roch's on Saturday, running out 3-1 winners at James McGrory Park - which is always a tough place to go.

Sadly for fellow South Ayrshire side Girvan, they could not join Troon in the fourth round draw.

They headed down to face Preston Athletic on Saturday, and lost a thrilling match 3-2.

Also crashing out was Kilbirnie Ladeside, as they lost a high-scoring encounter with St Andrews United 4-2.

Kilwinning Rangers enjoyed their travels, after they ran out 2-0 winners following a trip north to play Sauchie.

Irvine Meadow also fared well away from home, as they faced off against Lowland League side Gala Fairydean Rovers.

Meadow made their way into the fourth round courtesy of a battling 1-0 win at the Netherdale 3G Arena.

The South Challenge wasn't the only knockout competition being played this weekend, with one Ayrshire side in Scottish Junior Cup action.

Also in the third round stage, Largs Thistle made light work of Caledonian Locomotive - winning 5-0 to earn a place in the next stage.

Though league fixtures were few and far between, the matches which were taking place were of vital importance.

In the First Division, Maybole have been the surprise package so far this season and are well amongst the challengers for promotion.

They kept their fine form going on Saturday as they defeated Ashfield 2-1 to move just a point back from top spot.

The South Ayrshire side were helped out by resurgent Ardrossan Winton Rovers, who travelled to face second placed Rutherglen Glencairn.

Despite a shaky start to the season, Gavin Friels' men picked up a superb 3-2 win which has lifted them back in amongst the chasing pack.

In the Second Division, first met second at Burnside Park where Muirkirk Juniors faced off against Whitletts Victoria in an all Ayrshire clash.

It was the early league leaders who cemented their place at the top of the table with Muirkirk picking up an outstanding 4-0 win to go five clear at the summit.

Bonnyton Thistle also enjoyed their weekend as they climbed away from the league's relegation places.

A 2-0 win against Craigmark Burntonians was enough to lift Bonnyton out of the danger zone for the time being.

In the Third Division's only match, it was a superb weekend for Ardeer Thistle who eased their way to victory, beating Glenvale 5-1.

The result put the Stevenston side into the league's promotion places for the time being.

While Kello Rovers continued their strong start to life in the Fourth Division, as they won 3-0 away to Royal Albert.

The victory lifts Kello into second place, just two points back from leaders Knightswood.
