Ayr United will go clear on their own at the top of the Championship on Saturday if they avoid defeat at home to Hamilton Accies - though Scott Brown's men have more than a draw in their sights.

The Honest Men had originally been due to take on John Rankin's side in a midweek fixture at the end of October.

But with neither side in action in the first knockout stage of the Premier Sports League Cup this Saturday, having failed to progress beyond the tournament's group stages, the two clubs brought the fixture forward to what would otherwise have been a free weekend for both teams.

The two sides faced off at New Douglas Park in the season opener just two weeks ago, with Ayr emerging 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Anton Dowds and George Stanger, either side of a red card for Accies' Scott Martin.

The Honest Men followed that up with a thumping 5-0 win over Airdrie to sit top of the league after two games.

Only goal difference currently separates Ayr from second-placed Falkirk, but with no other Championship games being played this Saturday, a point will be enough to put Brown's men out on their own in pole position.

Hamilton, by contrast, have yet to find the net in the league this season after winning promotion to the second tier via the play-offs, though they did follow up that opening-day defeat with a point from a goalless draw away to Morton on August 10.
