Ayr United crashed out of the Premier Sports Cup at the group stages on Saturday afternoon despite victory over Buckie Thistle.
The Honest Men knew that they would need to beat the Highland League side by at least three goals to overturn Dundee United's superior goal difference and progress, should Falkirk beat Stenhousemuir.
The Bairns duly won 4-0, meaning that Ayr's single goal 3-2 victory was not enough to see them through as one of the best second placed sides.
Ayr had raced into a two goal lead in the first half, thanks to a double from Jay Henderson. However, the visitors came back in the second half and levelled the game through strikes from Josh Peters and John McLeod.
Despite Hake Hastie netting Ayr's winner, it was not enough to progress, and Scott Brown will now turn his attention to the upcoming Scottish Championship campaign.
