The Open at Royal Troon taking place next week has been revealed as this summer's cheapest major sporting event.

The Olympics in Paris comes in a close second, with other major events such as the British Grand Prix and Wimbledon close behind.

A study by Buzz Bingo revealed that to attend The Open, the average ticket would set you back £154, while a standard hotel room stands at just £202 within reasonable distance to the golf course (though you might struggle to find one this close to the tournament).

Taking into account a return flight from London to Paris for the Olympics, a resale ticket for the 100m track final and a night in a hotel, the overall figure is cheaper than a race ticket and hotel close to Silverstone.

The British Grand Prix took place on July 7 and ticket prices cost at least 25 per cent more than The Open.

The average ticket price for a single seat at last Sunday’s Grand Prix would have set you back around £600, with a hotel room for just one night close to Silverstone costing on average £272.

At £872 in total, this comes up at an eye-watering £144 more than a weekend away in Paris for the Olympics.

Return flights to Paris on Sunday, August 4 come up at £81, with a flight back to London the following day.

Category D tickets for the men’s 100m final cost a cool £280. A hotel is the most expensive outgoing, with the average at £361 for a Sunday night summer stay.

Looking at other upcoming or current sporting events, and resale tickets for the Wimbledon men’s final on Sunday are also eye-watering.

If you want to attend the SW19 showpiece on Sunday, the average ticket will cost you £11,664. You could attend the Paris Olympics 41 times over for the same price.
