AYR’S double goal hero Dipo Akinyemi says he’s convinced the Honest Men can achieve something special this season.
The summer signing hit two goals as Lee Bullen’s men extended their winning start to the Championship campaign with a 3-1 win over Dundee on Friday night.
In front of a live nationwide audience on BBC Scotland, Ayr roared back following the loss of an early goal to maintain their place at the top of the Championship table.
Akinyemi, whose performance earned him the man-of-the-match award, told Ayr United’s Black and White TV after the match: “It’s been really brilliant. The boys are really on it right now and we showed a lot of fight to get ourselves back into the game. I think we deservedly got the three points.
“We’ve got a really good bunch of lads in there (dressing room) and I really believe that we can do something this season.”
When speaking about his goals Dipo commented, “The first one it kind of hit off me but I had to do what all good strikers do.
“For the second one it came to me from Dara’s cross and I just made some space for myself and put the ball where it’s supposed to go this time, instead of hitting the post or the crossbar.”
Afterwards Bullen hailed the character of his players after falling behind to Zak Rudden’s goal in only the third minute of the match.
“I think we deserved the win in the end,” he said.
“The game ebbed and flowed with them having their chances and us having our own moments.
“They started like a whirlwid and we ended up a goal down after three minutes but the character in this group of players is unbelievable.
“We deservedly went in level at the break but Charlie Albinson could have easily been man of the match with the saves he made to keep us in the game.
“We weathered the storm, showed our character and our quality and deservedly went on and won the game with Dipo scoring two great goals.”
Next up for Ayr is a trip to Cappielow to face a Morton side who climbed to fourth place in the table on Saturday thanks to a 1-0 win at Inverness.
Next up for Ayr United is an away trip to Cappielow Park to take on Greenock Morton who have also had a solid start to their season sitting on eight points and in fourth place in the table.
