Ayr Boxing Club saw several of their members star at the Scottish Novice Championships.
The two day event at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Centre last month was the first competition for the club since lockdown ended.
The club had six boxers competing in the event with a mixed bag of results across the board but a strong showing from all members.
Kenzie Thomas and Lewis Ward lost in their contests but for their debut competitive bouts they both did extremely well.
Lochlann Mcreadie had comfortably won his bout but then a lack of discipline after the final bell saw him being disqualified.
Ryan Buchanan fought a superb contest to just miss out on a split decision to the eventual gold medalist Connor Crawford.
Despite a few of the members being unfortunate not to pick up on medals there were some boxers from the Ayr club who managed to reach the podium.
Niall Tait picked up the Silver medal in his age group whilst making his competitive debut.
Gordon Ward boxed on the first day of the event winning a unanimous points decision to reach the final on the second day.
Ward took on Ahaf Abdullah of Hamilton Boxing Club, who was one of the favourites to win the title.
However, from the ring of the first bell Ward made sure it wasn’t going to be easy for him.
The first round was explosive to say the least with Ward taking the fight to Abdullah.
The second round was much more even with Abdullah trying to pull back some of the ground lost in the first round.
The third and final round saw Ward take total control, boxing very cleverly picking up points and staying out of trouble to win the gold by unanimous decision.
Ayr Boxing Club coach Allan Bell says he was thrilled with his club’s showing on their competitive return.
He said: “I was over the moon and extremely proud of all his boxers after all the hard work they’d put in on their own throughout Covid restrictions and once lock-down was over.
“The coaching team myself, Alex McQue and David McKenna are delighted with the all the lads but in particular, the stand out performances of Buchanan and the medalists Tait and Ward.”
