A BROTHER and sister from Prestwick and a Mauchline teenager are aiming to be smash hits for Scotland after being called up to compete in major events.

Adam Hall (19) from Mauchline (19) and Prestwick ace Ben Torrance (21) have been selected for the first time for an eight-strong Scotland squad who head to Kazan in Russia for the European Men's Badminton Team Championships from February 16 to 21.

They will join fellow debutant Alex Dunn (17) f rom Motherwell, Robert Blair (Glasgow), Martin Campbell (Edinburgh), Matthew Carder (South Queensferry), Patrick MacHugh (Glasgow) and Kieran Merrilees (Glasgow), in the line-up. All three debutants have won the National Under- 19 singles title in the last four years after dominating as they came through the age group championships and their selection gives Scotland options in singles and doubles.

Ben's younger sister Ciara is in the Scotland squad for the European Under-17 Championships in the Polish city of Lubin from March 17 to 25.

The Under-17 squad also includes Ciar Pringle and twins Christopher and Matthew Grimley from Glasgow, Glen Lewington and Lily Farnood (Edinburgh), Lauren Middleton (Dundee) and Sarah Sidebottom (Rothesay).

The team events runs from March 17 to 21 and the individual events from March 21 to 25.

Thirty-three teams will be competing and the team draw is on January 26 with the individual draw on March 8. Scotland will be looking to improve on joint 17th place when the last championship was staged in Ankara in 2014.
