SOUTH Ayrshire Council has issued an urgent scam warning after a tenant was targeted.
Unsolicited phone calls, texts and WhatsApp messages are becoming increasingly common, and last month a local council tenant was targeted by a scam.
The caller claimed the property was due for modernisation and asked for details about the house and its occupants.
Shortly after, the tenant received a WhatsApp message requesting photos of every room inside the house, as well as the exterior.
The resident acted quickly and contacted the council on 0300 123 0900, who confirmed this was a scam. The tenant then deleted and blocked the numbers without sharing any details.
Trading Standards and Police Scotland Ayrshire are urging residents to remain vigilant, and if you’re contacted by cold callers or receive messages from unknown numbers, remember to take a moment to think and consider if it could be fake.
If you believe you’ve fallen for a scam, contact your bank immediately and report it to the police.
If in doubt, contact Trading Standards on 0300 123 0900 or email trading.standards@south-ayrshire.gov.uk.
