RESIDENTS in South Ayrshire are being warned of a new scam surrounding debt collection.
The council's trading standards and environmental health team have been made aware of residents receiving scam calls where the caller claims to be from a debt collection company.
The local authority is urging residents to be careful, even if the caller claims to be from a company they are aware of and who they may have been in contact with previously.
A council spokesperson said: "Verify the caller’s identity by calling back on an official number. If the caller names the company ask for their name, hang up and check online for the correct telephone number before calling the company back to verify if they had contacted you.
"Never share or confirm personal details like your bank account number, passwords, or PINs over the phone.
"Be cautious of urgent requests for money or personal information. Report suspicious calls."
