AN HISTORIC Ayr pub has started the restoration of its unique thatched roof.
The Tam O'Shanter Inn, on the town's High Street, is a category B listed building with a unique straw roof.
The owners of the pub had applied for planning permission to replace the roof with a like-for-like replacement, with the operations of the business not being affected.
The Tam O'Shanter Inn is Ayr's oldest public house and restaurant serving a range of traditional beers, malts and wines along with a full menu of home cooked traditional Scottish food.
Officials at South Ayrshire Council approved the application with no specific conditions, and the plan was also given the green light by Historic Environment Scotland.
Works have now started on the pub roof, with the business remaining open as normal.
A spokesperson said: "Almost two years in the planning and organising and finally it begins. The restoration of the thatched roof of our Tam O'Shanter Inn.
"Business as usual during the work, as always a warm welcome awaits along with cold beers, great Guinness and quality malts.
"Be part of the history, see you there."
