AYR MSP Siobhian Brown has welcomed the news that a charity dedicated to improving mental health for men has recently expanded its services to include a new women’s group.

The move by Andy’s Man Club in Ayr comes at a critical time for the community, which has seen several tragic deaths in the past year, leaving many in the community in shock.

Ms Brown recently met with Garry Savage from the charity and heard how they were founded to provide a safe, judgment-free space for men to discuss their mental health challenges.

With locations throughout the UK, including in Ayr, the group has seen a notable increase in men seeking support in recent weeks.

The charity’s work provides an outlet for those who feel they have nowhere else to turn.

After meeting the group, Ayr MSP Siobhian Brown praised the charity for their on-going efforts.

She said: “I have personally known three men who have sadly taken their lives in the past year.

"Suicide touches many lives and has a profound effect on those family and friends left behind.

"It is in times like these that we see the critical importance of organisations like Andy’s Man Club.

"The rise in men reaching out in recent weeks shows the need for this type of peer-to-peer support, and the work they do is lifesaving.

“Their decision to extend support to women is equally commendable, showing their commitment to the widespread impact of mental health struggles.

"This new initiative provides a similar safe space for women, aiming to foster conversation, connection, and mutual support.

“I send my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of those men I knew who are left with this devastating loss and to everyone suffering because of suicide. I would urge anyone who needs it to reach out and ask for help.”

Garry Savage, from the Ayr group, said: “We're here for anyone who needs us. Our aim has always been to break down the stigma around mental health and create a community where people can openly share their experiences, find comfort, and support one another.

"One of the massive benefits of being a peer-to-peer support group is that everyone can support and relate to each other through lived experiences.

"There is absolutely no pressure to talk at our groups - simply listening to others is often beneficial.”

Andy’s Man Club meetings are free and open to all men aged 18 and over. With the new women’s group now launched, they are also open to women seeking support and community.

The charity encourages anyone struggling to attend a meeting and find out more about how they can help.
