Council leader Martin Dowey has teased plans to bring an exciting array of American aircraft to next year's International Ayr Show.

Hundreds of thousands flocked to Ayr's Low Green over the weekend to watch a packed schedule of displays by aircraft including the iconic Lancaster bomber and Typhoon.

Alongside the displays, there was plenty of fun for all the family with rides, entertainment, stalls and much more.

Speaking at the event, Mr Dowey told the Advertiser that the region must get back to being a tourist destination first and foremost.

He explained: "I think we've forgotten over the years that Ayrshire and town's like Ayr are tourist towns, because we've been trying to do something different.

"We need to encourage people to come here, and we're putting on events like this to do that. They come for things like this and then they decide to come back down to Ayr.

"We've got things like Tamfest coming up and hopefully next year we might have another big event that's coming.

"We're trying our best as a council, and the majority are buying into it. I don't know anybody who could knock this event."

The council leader hopes that next year's festival will be bigger and better, with some extra help from across the pond.

He added: "We're very happy that the Canadians are here along with the Americans, and we're hoping that will bear fruit next year.

"We'll hopefully get some big American aircraft here, maybe some F-18s. That's in the early stages but we're just happy with what we've got.

"Anyone that saw the flying with the Lancaster and the Typhoon, flying into that sunset was just iconic."
