A popular Ayr takeaway and diner has scooped two awards in just a few weeks, including being named the best dessert outlet in Scotland.

Nanny Mary’s walked away with the Dessert Outlet of the Year award at the 10th Food Awards Scotland 2024.

The Smith Street business launched as a takeaway during the Covid crisis and the response was so good they opened Ayr's dessert parlour just over two years ago.

It also took home the Achievement Award for best desserts in Scotland presented by E2 Media Awards.

Media manager Allana Harte, who runs the business with parents Michael and Allana and her uncle Noel, hopes the awards can help bring more footfall to the town and benefit all businesses in Ayr.

She said: “It’s such a fantastic achievement, and that’s three awards this year alone we have won.

“Our main focus at the moment apart from providing good value for money is to bring more footfall to Ayr.

“We want people to travel here and if we can boast we have the best burgers or the best desserts in the country, then that can definitely help.

“Ayr has been lacking footfall in recent years but we have had so many local businesses win national awards recently, that can only be a good thing.”

Allana admits the team have worked hard to make their desserts the best in the country, and reveals one ingredient stands out from the rest.

“We’ve had quite a large menu and we like to try things out, and over the years we have got it down to a tee.

“Anything Kinder is the most popular by far, and our Kinder waffle always flies out the door.

“Our diner does a variety of food ranging from breakfasts to evening meals and desserts, and the takeaway caters for lunches and such like.”

Allana has thanked the Nanny Mary’s customers for all their support, as they look forward to a busy few months ahead.

She added: “We’ve got a stall at the International Ayr Show for the first time and we have no idea what to expect.

“We’re going to give it a good go and hopefully people want to come and try the best desserts in Scotland.”
