Staff at a South Ayrshire drug and alcohol support service are encouraging residents to ask for help if they need it.
According to new figures from the National Records of Scotland, 16 people in South Ayrshire died through drug use in 2023 - an increase of six per cent on the previous year.
Johnny Lusk, team leader at WithYou in South Ayrshire, said: “My thoughts are with all those who have lost a loved one.
“I want to reassure people who are worried about their drug use, or that of a loved one, that support is available in South Ayrshire and recovery is possible. Please do not hesitate to get in touch - we are WithYou.”
WithYou in South Ayrshire, which has a base in Ayr and works across the region, offers free and confidential support, without judgement, to adults facing challenges with drugs and alcohol.
Johnny continued: “While effective and innovative work is taking place across Scotland, so much more needs to be done to address this public health crisis.
“I believe that drug support services should not be delivered in isolation because, while drugs may be a significant issue in a person's life, they will not be the only issue.
“Employment opportunities, availability of housing, and access to health and mental health services are all vital aspects - but it’s about so much more than simply surviving. It’s about ensuring that people have the opportunity to thrive.”
