Scotland is a country which prides itself on first class education - be that at primary, secondary or university level.

With the introduction of free tuition in 2008, we have seen a significant increase in university attendance of young people from the most deprived areas, creating equal opportunities for all.

Most recently, it was announced the number of students from the most deprived areas hit a new high. According to recent figures, there has been a 12 per cent increase in acceptances from the 20 per cent most deprived areas in Scotland to all UK universities. This is up by 540 on last year, to a record 5,080.

It’s fantastic to see the attainment gap closing. There is now clear progress being made, widening access to further education and ensuring every young person has the opportunity to attend university.

It is imperative we continue to strive to ensure all of our young people receive equal opportunities. Everyone regardless of their background or circumstance should have the opportunity to learn and grow at university.

From the 2024-25 academic term students will now receive an additional £2,400 on top of their annual support package, taking the undergraduate funding package up to £11,400 every year.

It is evident through these efforts the Scottish Government remain committed to removing barriers to further education.

Our young people are now being provided with the resources to go to university. I’m confident in the future they will excel in the workforce and create a better Scotland for us all.

It is crucial our children are given the best possible start in their early education. The new school year adds additional stress as parents may struggle to ensure their child has everything they need for the new term.

That’s why it is important you check what benefits you may be entitled to.

The Scottish Government provide several benefits to support young people throughout their early years and are continuing to do so with the Best Start Grant – School Age Payment.

This grant is available to parents when their children are old enough to start primary school and will help with the costs of preparing for school.
