South Scotland MSP Sharon Dowey has praised the work of firefighters after visiting Maybole, Girvan and Colmonell Community Fire Stations in South Ayrshire.

The Conservative MSP praised the work of the Community Fire Stations and commended firefighters for the invaluable work they do, saving lives, and protecting Scotland’s communities.

Meeting with Area Commander Ian McMeekin, Watch Commander Kevin McDermott, Crew Commanders James Hewitt and Greg Adams and Firefighters Sean Murdoch and Ewan McCosh, the South Scotland MSP heard about the stations’ On Call Duty System, fire contaminants, and estate management, amongst many other things.

When arriving at Maybole Community Fire Station, the team were just returning from a call out in which they saved 25 calves who were in danger due to extreme rainfall.

The MSP said: “It was a real pleasure to visit Girvan, Maybole and Colmonell Community Fire Stations and meet some of the fantastic firefighters and staff.

“Each member of the team does incredible work in protecting the public, serving our communities and evolving to adapt to the new challenges they face.

“Community Fire Stations are the backbone of our rural communities and it is vitally important that the public feel they can rely on the first-class emergency services they deserve.

“I will continue to work with the Ayrshire Fire and Rescue Service to ensure the sustained and successful long-term future of our Community Fire Stations.

“I thank all those from our Community Fire Stations who do exemplary work, and we are all grateful for their continued efforts to protect the people of Ayrshire.

“They are always looking for dedicated individuals to join their ranks as volunteer firefighters. Get involved at https://www.firescotland.gov.uk/careers/on-call-firefighter/volunteer-duty-system-for-on-call-firefighters/.”
