Volunteers at Girvan RNLI are beginning an ambitious challenge to float in the town's harbour for 200 hours.

The first of the volunteers will heading into a liferaft at 10.24am today (Wednesday) for eight days and eight hours.

Volunteers will stay on the raft in shifts continually 24 hours a day until 6.24pm on Thursday, August 1.

The charity is taking on the challenge to mark 200 years of the RNLI, with the organisation founded in 1824.

A Girvan RNLI spokesperson said: "Head down and give them some support, at any point our liferaft will be manned, don't be shy to give them a shout and a wave.

"Sponsor us at anytime during the challenge, We’d appreciate as many kind people helping us along the way. If you can, please donate to our just giving campaign."
