Visitors descending on South Ayrshire for The Open at Royal Troon are being urged to get out and explore the rest of the region.

The oldest golf tournament in the world is under way at the seaside course, just a few miles from Prestwick Golf Club, where it was first held in 1860.

It is the 10th time the Championship has been held at the venue, with over 200,000 spectators set to enjoy the action this week.

VisitScotland’s regional director Lynsey Eckford is encouraging those spectators to get out adn enjoy all that Ayrshire has to offer.

She said: “We’re excited seeing Royal Troon host The 152nd Open which will bring in 250,000 spectators and once again put Ayrshire in the spotlight.

“The Open Championships brings huge economic and social benefits to Scotland and its host region, providing a boost to accommodation, hospitality, retail and attractions in the area.

“We’d encourage the spectators, players and tournament officials to get out and about and explore the region if they get the opportunity, and we hope to see golf enthusiasts return when Ayrshire stages the Women’s Scottish Open at Dundonald in August.”
