Members of Troon Rotary Club have joined the team of volunteers at the 152nd Open.

With Royal Troon Golf Club hosting the event this year, Rotary Club members will be managing the Wayfinder Volunteers, who work off the course at park and rides, including train and shuttle bus locations.

The Rotarians will ensure each Wayfinder has the necessary support to work in a safe and secure manner, with volunteer welfare being a key component.

A club spokesperson said: "It was back in October 2023 when President of Troon Rotary, Jyl Ashton Cunningham, suggested that we offer our services in support of The 152nd Open at Royal Troon.

"As a club we have a wealth of experience in a wide range of professions and businesses including hospitality, health, finance, military, rescue services and education.

"It was felt that we could bring value to the table, not just as volunteers, but working with the R&A to enhance this prestigious event and were delighted at the reception we received from the Open Team with some ideas on how we could help, being proposed at our very first meeting."

The Rotary Club also has a designated drinks can collection point within The Open Camping Village.

This initiative is part of the wider Can Collection service which Troon Rotary runs across the local community throughout the year and sees cans collected from local hotels and pubs, crushed by the club members and sold to a scrap merchant at the monetary rate for aluminium.

The money raised is then used to support Troon Community Projects.

In addition, the club will be a key player in the implementation of The Open’s Community Reuse Project, redistributing items of value from staging infrastructure, such as wood, nails and material, to local community groups after the Championship.

Finally, they will be supporting The Open Legacy Fund, which will see grants provided by The R&A specifically to support community lead sustainability projects in the local area.

Hannah Lynch, Project Manager, Championships with The Open, welcomed the partnership and said, “We appreciate the support of The Rotary Club of Troon and its members in doing so much to assist with the smooth running of the Championship.

"Having a team of dedicated and knowledgeable local volunteers will be a huge help and we are delighted to work with the Club on sustainability projects which will benefit the local community."
