This week, we take a look back at the big South Ayrshire stories from July 2009.
And surprise, surprise, the Open Championship at Turnberry topped the headlines in the Ayr Advertiser 15 years ago this week.
Veteran golfer Tom Watson came oh so close to winning the 2009 Open Championship at Turnberry at the age of 59. He narrowly missed a par putt in the play-off, losing out to fellow American Stewart Cink. But locals were less than happy, with huge traffic jams causing delays around Carrick.
Two Troon men were presented with Rotary International’s highest awards in July 2009. Troon Rotary Club members Douglas Fraser and Bill Weir won the Paul Harris Fellowship awards for their years of service.
Music students from Ayr College were enjoying weekly workshops at a top music studio in July 2009. The HND Sound Production students had been tuning their skills at the Park Lane Recording Studios in Glasgow.
Meet Troon’s own ‘Sundae Girl’ from July 2009. Neve Lawson, nine, won an art competition run by the town’s C-Gull’s Café – and her specially designed sweet would go on sale throughout the summer.
The Prestwick Academy 2009 Dux Lindsey Mathers, left, with head Mr Bone and Proxime Accessit Lynsey Reid.
Representatives from Ayr College took part in a ‘21 Days of Hair and Beauty’ campaign in July 2009, visiting schools and shopping centres to provide make-up, hairdressing and nail demonstrations.
