Work has been completed on a section of collapsed ground in an Ayr street.

We reported last year how a section of road in Thornwood Avenue appeared to partially collapse.

The road was fenced off for safety reasons, while investigation work was carried out to discover the cause of the issue.

The Coal Authority said that the damage had been caused by a coal mine shaft which was abandoned more than a century ago.

During the works, concerned residents said they had no received updates on how works were progressing, but the Coal Authority said it had a 24/7 contact number for any concerns.

After more than a year of work, the issue has been full repaired and the road is back to normal, with workers set to monitor the site over the coming months.

Megan Phillips from the Coal Authority's public safety team, said: “Our initial work involved fencing off the affected area to keep people safe before undertaking thorough investigations to establish the root cause of the ground collapse.

“It was a complex incident because we knew there was a recorded mine shaft there and the possibility of shallow coal mine seams which presents engineering challenges.

“We established that the collapse was caused by a historical mine shaft at the location. We carried out structural inspections of nearby properties and long-term monitoring of the ground to establish that there were no further threats to residents.”

The permanent fix comprised treating the mine shaft with a polyurethane resin grout, and installing a central monitoring pipe and monitoring equipment in and around the shaft.

Extensive drilling had to be undertaken and a large crane was required to help build a drilling platform during the work.

The Coal Authority has thanked residents for their patience and understanding throughout.
