Two stalwart volunteers from an Ayrshire-based respite charity were honoured to attend the Royal Garden Party at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

Dave Ferguson, from Mauchline, and Kevin Thomas, from Ayr, were joined by their wives May and Ros to celebrate the royal occasion.

Dave and Kevin, who both volunteer with Whiteleys Retreat, were recommended by the charity’s founder and chief executive, Maxine Allan, for their services to the organisation.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh joined King Charles and Queen Camilla as they hosted their annual garden party in the Scottish capital.

They were joined by thousands of invited guests from all over Scotland who have made an impact in various sectors of their local community and beyond.

Whiteleys Retreat provides free therapeutic short breaks for children, young people and their families with cancer and life altering illnesses.

The retreat, near Alloway, boasts 32 acres of private land, offering families the opportunity for recreation, reflection, relaxation, relief, and building resilience, and most importantly, to spend time together.

Formerly a working farm, it was bought by the charity in 2018 and boasts a garden of wellbeing, a sensory play park, an area for reflection and a varied animal population.

A charity spokesperson said: "What a lovely occasion and thank you for sharing your photographs of the day.

"You all look absolutely splendid. Thank you for being amazing ambassadors for the charity."
