TWO women were rushed to hospital following a major crash that closed an Ayr road for almost seven hours.

Police Scotland reported the closure of the A77 at the Bankfield roundabout, near University Hospital Ayr, following the incident around 4.40pm on Wednesday, June 26.

It was initially believed that the crash involved three vehicles, but Police Scotland now say that three cars and a van were all involved.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the collision, which involved a green Citroen C4 Cactus, a grey Volkswagon Tiguan, a white Mercedes HGV and a white Ford Fiesta van.

The driver of the Citroen, an 30-year-old woman, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where her condition is described as serious but stable.

The driver of the Tiguan, a 49-year-old woman, was taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock for treatment.

No-one else was injured and the road reopened just after midnight.

Now Police Scotland are appealing for information following the serious crash.

Constable Stewart Carden said: “Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what happened and we are asking anyone who can assist to get in touch.

“If you were in the area at the time and can help or have dash-cam footage that has captured useful information then please make contact with officers.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 2528 of June 26.
