Ancient human remains were found during an archaeological dig within the caves beneath Culzean Castle in July 2004. The discovery by a Channel 4 team, pictured, caused experts to wonder if they could be linked to the legend of cannibal Sawney Bean, who is rumoured to have lived in the caves in the 16th century.

A surveying chain belonging to Robert Burns was linked together for the first time in 200 years when an important collection of his works was unveiled at Burns National Heritage Park in Alloway in July 2004.
