AN AYRSHIRE MSP is calling on local women to ‘prioritise booking and attending their smear test’ to prevent and reduce their risk of cervical cancer in the future.
Sharon Dowey spoke out at the launch of Cervical Cancer Week 2024, which runs until June 23.
Cervical screenings look for Human Papillomavirus (HPV), the leading cause of almost all cervical cancer cases. Cervical screenings also detect any changes to the cervical cells which can then be monitored and treated to prevent cancer developing.
According to the national charity, the Eve Appeal, which funds research and raises awareness into the five gynaecological cancers, the screening programme has saved more than 5,000 lives every year.
Ms Dowey, who represents the South Scotland region for the Conservatives, said: “This Cervical Screening Awareness Week, it is more important than ever to remind Ayrshire women to book and attend their smear test when invited”.
“A smear test can detect a problem early, before there are any symptoms – and attending the screening is one of the most important ways that women can protect themselves from the risk of cervical cancer.
“That’s why it’s concerning to read that the number of women attending their cervical screening continues to decline year-on-year, with an average of just 68 per cent of women invited for a test attending their appointment.
“I’d encourage all women in Ayrshire to prioritise their next smear test and to look into the additional support and advice provided by Cancer Research UK, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, and The Eve Appeal."
