The Carrick History Society is looking for the community’s views on the potential takeover of the former Post Office building in Maybole.

The community group is looking at the potential use of the High Street premises as a heritage hub that would incorporate an exhibition space, a museum, a visitor information point, retail space and a heritage and craft offering.

If there's enough community support for the idea, a funding application would be submitted to the Scottish Land Fund.

The suggestion comes after the total renovation of a former charity shop in High Street as part of the Maybole Regeneration Project, now known as The Gatherings.

And Simon Glendinning, chair of the Carrick History Society, is keen to show what can be done with another new space.

He said: “This is by no means a certainty, and at this very early stage, we are simply seeking views on the project.

“North Carrick does not currently have a community space that is solely themed around heritage, and from previous consultations, we know this is something that is desired in the community.

“The pop-up exhibition we had in The Gatherings was a huge success, and made us realise how good it would be to have our own premises.

“We were looking through vacant properties in the area and this one just ticked all the boxes.”

The former building at 3 High Street has been vacant since the end of last year, when the sorting office moved to Girvan.

Simon believes that it could have a wide variety of uses, and could give locals a community space to be proud of.

He said: “There is a huge sorting office area with high ceilings and lots of natural light, which makes it a perfect place for a heritage and craft centre.

“We could have weaving, woodworking, pottery, stained glass, and the building could also be used for a permanent exhibition and museum space.

“North Carrick doesn’t have anything of the sort, so it would be a real boost for tourism if we could get it off the ground.

“There is so much heritage and history in our area, as well as lovely walks and great facilities, and it’s time we showed that off.”
