POLICE are stepping up their patrols in the centre of Ayr after a shocking incident at a High Street store which appeared to show a teenagerpulling out a machete and threaten a staff member.
Two teens have been arrested and charged with assault following the disturbance, which was filmed and shared online last week.
One of the teens, aged just 16, has been charged with vandalism and possession of a weapon, while the other, also 16, has been charged with threatening and abusive behaviour.
The owners of Ayr Local in High Street posted footage online showing a group of youths in front of the shop with a staff member at the front door on Wednesday, May 22.
Ayr MSP Siobhian Brown told the Advertiser police are increasing their patrols in the area while officers continue their investigation.
Ms Brown, who is also Scotland’s community safety minister, said such incidents "go against everything the community of Ayr stands for", and that they will "not be tolerated".
She explained: “It is deeply disturbing to hear of violent behaviour like this in my constituency and I share the concerns of the residents and businesses.
“I have contacted police and they have told me that they are increasing patrols in the area to provide greater visibility and act as a deterrent.
“I am sorry that the shop staff had to go through this, and I trust that they are being supported. Crimes of this nature go against everything the community of Ayr stands for and no-one should ever be subjected to this treatment.
“As constituency MSP I stand firmly against hate and discrimination.
“If you have any information on this incident, I urge you to contact police. It is crucial that those carrying out crimes of this nature know that it simply will not be tolerated.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 7.40pm on Wednesday, May 22 we were called to a report of a disturbance within business premises in High Street, Ayr.
“Officers attended and the youths had left the premises.
"A 16-year-old male youth was later arrested and charged in connection with possession of an offensive weapon, assault and vandalism and was due to appear at Ayr Sheriff Court on Thursday, May 23.
"Another 16-year-old male youth was later arrested and charged in connection with assault and threatening and abusive behaviour and is due to appear in court at a later date."
“Enquiries are ongoing.”
