Ayr Advertiser: Tortoises

The popular Troon Tortoises 10K race in May 2014 saw 882 people complete the course, with Shettleston Harriers runner Michael Deason emerging as the winner in 32 minutes, 18 seconds.


Ayr Advertiser: Ryanair

Ryanair celebrated its 20th anniversary at Prestwick Airport in May 2014. The Irish airline started with one flight between Prestwick and Dublin but 10 years ago were taking passengers to 24 destinations from Ayrshire. Prestwick’s Chief Executive Iain Cochrane said: “Happy birthday Ryanair… and we look forward to 20 more years of low fares and great customer service at Prestwick.”

Ayr Advertiser: Trump

US tycoon and future president Donald Trump vowed money would be thrown at Turnberry, after acquiring the luxury golf resort in 2014. The Donald said South Ayrshire should prepare for a ‘love fest’, but denied rumours the resort was to be renamed ‘Trumpberry’.


Ayr Advertiser: Cammy

Brave Troon footballer Cammy McKinnell made a Roy-of-the-Rovers style dream comeback, only six months after suffering a stroke on the pitch. The 28-year-old Troon FC captain, who lives in the town, scored to help the Seasiders secure a place in the final of the Ayrshire Weekly Press Cup in May 2014.


Ayr Advertiser: Newton and Wellington pupils got a hazard safety lesson in 2014

Primary school pupils from Ayr became Hazard Heroes in May 2014. Pupils from Newton Primary and Wellington School attended a health and safety day at Dam Park to learn about potential hazards.
