USERS of the gym at The QuayZone in Girvan could soon have somewhere new to call home.

The facility has been lying empty for months after suffering severe damage during storms earlier this year.

It was recently revealed that it could take up to 18 months to bring the building back to full working order.

However, The Quay Zone has now been granted use of part of Girvan Community Centre as a temporary gym.

A spokesperson for South Carrick Community Leisure, which runs The QuayZone, said: "Work will get under way immediately to make the necessary building adaptions and install the gym equipment so that we can be open as soon as possible."

Swimming lessons and activities will continue to be provided at Maybole Swimming Pool on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday morning.

The facility has also revealed that works are underway to replace the roof, and steps are being taken to dry out the interior of the building.

The spokesperson added: "This means that the next phase of the project will require a substantial amount of work and could take 18 months.

"We know that many in the community are anxious for a return of The Quay Zone and trustees wish to reassure everyone that we are working hard with out partners to make this happen as soon as possible."
