Curling fever swept South Ayrshire in 2014 when Ayr Ice Rink hosted a come-and-try. The timing could hardly have been better with Prestwick curler Scott Andrews helping the Team GB men win a silver medal at the Winter Olympics in Russia and the GB women’s team landing bronze.

Pop diva Beyonce’s appearance at Prestwick in February 2014 was shrouded in mystery. The singer’s private jet touched down at the airport for a hush-hush landing en route to the Brit Awards, with only a picture of her hidden under an umbrella to show for it.

The new Kirkmichael Primary School was declared open by Councillor Margaret Toner in February 2013. The school was built on the site of the old one and teachers and pupils had moved to McCosh Hall for lessons for more than a year.

An Ayr academic was playing his part in the 2014 Winter Olympics. Professor Andy Miah, of the University of the West of Scotland’s Ayr Campus, was undertaking key research at the games in Sochi, Russia.

Struthers Primary School held a charity blue day in February 2014. Part of an event to raise funds for UNICEF, the children dressed up in blue to show their support for the children’s charity, raising more than £160.

The pupils of St Cuthbert's Primary said goodbye to the Year of the Snake and hello to the Year of the Horse in February 2014. They welcomed Holly Hou, a Chinese Mandarin teacher at Queen Margaret Academy, to their school for the afternoon and enjoyed learning about the culture and traditions as part of their celebrations of The Chinese New Year.
