A MAJOR UK convenience chain could soon be set to take over the Matalan building in Ayr.
Plans have been submitted to South Ayrshire Council for Home Bargains to become the new occupiers of the building in the town's Beresford Terrace.
It was announced earlier this week that Matalan would be closing later this year, with the fashion retailer stating that the building's owner has opted not to renew the lease.

Work is ongoing to secure jobs for the Ayr staff at other Matalan locations.
However, it's now a possibility that the store will not be vacant for too long.
Iceni has submitted an application, on behalf of building owners , T.J. Morris LTD, for Home Bargains to take over the shop.
An application states that "The proposal of development does not change the use of Unit 1, rather is in relation to the alterations necessary for the change in ownership from Matalan to Home Bargains."
A supporting letter with the application adds: "The proposal represents an opportunity to refresh the existing retail unit via several external alterations.
"The change in ownership from Matalan to Home Bargains comprises a series of alterations to the exterior of all elevations which are considered to be in-keeping with the immediate surroundings and is considered to improve the wider amenity of the area.
"The proposal will deliver a modern and distinctive retail frontage which is considered to enhance the amenity of the area."
A café area also looks set to be included in the new plans, if approved.
Home Bargains already has a store at Ayr's Heathfield Retail Park.
It's not yet clear if the fresh plans would be a relocation of this store, or an additional shop.
No date has yet been set for when a decision will be made by council bosses on the plans.
