A search has begun to find a new publican to run The Dan McKays pub, located in Troon.

Situated in the heart of the coastal town and just a short walk away from The Royal Troon Golf Club which will host The Open, the oldest golf tournament in the world, in 2024, a new landlord is urgently needed, says owner, Greene King.

The Dan McKays is famous in Troon for having the biggest pub garden in the town, and perhaps South Ayrshire.

It previously won the best beer garden in Ayrshire ward in 2019, after being voted for by the region's Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) members.

The famous Portland Street bar is a favourite of locals, especially during the summer on hot, sunny days.

The community pub is also known for its live sport and popular quiz nights in the local area.

With such a large pub garden and The Open just around the corner, which is expected to contribute millions to the local economy, it is hoped a new landlord or landlady can be found to take on the pub.

Alongside its large beer garden and close proximity to The Royal Troon Golf Club, The Dan McKays’ town centre location has also made it a popular community pub known for its live sport and popular quiz nights in the local area.

The pub building is owned by Belhaven Pub Partners, part of Greene King Pub Partners, the leased, tenanted and franchise division of Belhaven and Greene King, and is available for a tenant to operate as their own pub business.

They say an entrepreneurial publican who can make the most of The Open next year while keeping the pub a community hub and making the most of its beer garden would be needed to make the pub a great success and reach its potential.

With the right individual or team behind the bar who have close links to the local community but are able to make the most of the boost in trade from The Open, Belhaven Pub Partners believe The Dan McKays could become a thriving successful pub business once more.

Sandra Donnelly, business development manager for Belhaven Pub Partners, part of Greene King, said: “The Dan McKays has huge potential. Its beer garden is by far the biggest in Troon and the pub is known as a hub of the local community.

"With The Open hosted just one mile down the road in 2024, we want to get a new landlord or landlady into the pub ready to make the most of the major trading opportunity this will provide.”
