A popular gritter naming competition is back and it’s looking for your punniest entries.
Run by the company responsible for maintaining the motorway and trunk road network in South-West Scotland, Amey, the appeal is open until Monday January 16.
The competition has gained worldwide attention for its winter-themed entries with favourites like Sir Grits Hoy, Yes Sir, Ice Can Boogie, Skid Vicious, and Sweet Child O’ Brine winning to become classics within the fleet.
Winners from last year include Jack Jarvice and Victor McSprayed (Jack Jarvis & Victor McDade from TV’s Still Game), Gritney Spears (Britney Spears), Sir David Attenbrrrrrr (Sir David Attenborough), Snowey Tribbiani (from TV’s Friends), Betty White-out (Golden Girl Betty White), and Snowing Me, Snowing You (Abba song).
Scottish household names have even thrown their hat in the ring with Barr’s entering a play on their catchphrase gets you thru, Grits You Thru, and Tunnock’s suggesting Caramelt Wafer – a reference to their famous caramel wafers.
0ver 3,000 winter-themed gritter names have been submitted by the Scottish public for consideration since the viral appeal started.
