Ayr MSP Siobhan Brown has welcomed the news that South Ayrshire Council has put a Station Hotel Working Group in place.
The working group was announced by Conservative council leader Martin Dowey as part of a commitment to find a solution to the long-running headache of the decaying building.
Ms Brown said: “The new group is a positive step for the town and brings us closer to a resolution. This must be a priority as we start to rebuild Ayr town centre.
“In a bid to secure a resolution, the Scottish Government has been corresponding with South Ayrshire Council over the past year and is continuing its commitment to work closely with the local authority.
“More recently a meeting with the Transport Minister was held on March 1.
“It was agreed at that meeting that a memorandum of understanding be put in place to ensure commitment to the project and to confirm roles and responsibilities.
“Cross-party support for Ayr’s long-term strategy is crucial as we move forward. I’ve said in my correspondence to the working group that I am happy to help, and I am willing to work with anyone for the benefit of our town.”
