It was differing fortunes for Ayr Cricket club and Cambusdoon XI, as their matches saw one defeat, and one call-off due to the weather.
Ayr played host to West of Scotland at Cambusdoon on Saturday in the Western Union.
Captain Andi McElnea won the toss and chose to bat but they got off to the worst possible start as a top order collapse saw them reduced to 13-4 with English run out by an excellent direct hit from Spensley, Grobler, Miller and Jefferson the batsmen out to be followed shortly after by Flack, Logan and Andi McElnea to leave them in dire straits at 61-7.
There was then a stand of 41 between Scott McElnea (24) and Jonny Baines (24) which saw a brief recovery, but they both then fell with the score on 102 and when Callum Leck was caught and bowled by Dutia, they were all out for 106.
When West came to bat, they were also in early trouble as Scott McElnea clean bowled Page and Neil Flack had Oliver caught at slip by English to leave them on 11-2.
But that was to be only bright point for Ayr as the visitor’s Australian overseas amateurs, brothers Tom and Joe Colgan saw West complete a comfortable victory by eight wickets with plenty of overs to spare.
On Thursday Ayr got their McCulloch Cup campaign off to an excellent start with an emphatic win against Irvine at Marress.
The Cambusdoon XI were away to Partick at Hamilton Crescent on League duty. Ross Mitchel won the toss and chose to bat, and openers Woodhouse and Lilley got off to a solid start but once they departed there was mini collapse before Richie Borland (41) and Iyaz Qasim (20) restored some order with stand of 40.
But they both departed on 143 and sadly the tail did not wag as they were bowled out for 158.
Heavy rain brought an end to Cambusdoon’s opening Western Cup match against East Renfrewshire on Tuesday after 15 overs with the home team looking to be in control on 106-4 and skipper Ross Mitchell leading the way on 34no.
This week sees Ayr at home to Kelburne in the Western Union on Saturday. The Cambusdoon XI are away to Whitehaugh on Saturday.
