Wildfire Ayrshire: Fire crews called out to Patna blaze

The wildfire, which had spread to cover an area of between 100-150 metres, required the services of fire crews to put it out to prevent it from spreading even further.

The incident occured on grassland just outside of Patna at around 8.30pm last night.

Nobody was injured as a result of the blaze.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 8.36pm on Thursday, April 21 to reports of grass on fire near to Kilmein Avenue, Patna.

“Operations Control mobilised one fire appliance and firefighters extinguished an area of grass on fire measuring approximately 100–150 metres.

“There were no reported casualties and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”

The blaze came just hours after fire chiefs had warned of an 'extreme' risk of wildfires developing in Ayrshire and the West of Scotland this weekend.

The warning from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) applies from Friday, April 22 and lasts until Monday, April 25 as warm weather and strong winds heightens the risk of wildfires igninting and spreading easily.

Group Commander Keith Langley, who is part of an SFRS team of wildfire tactical advisers, is urging the public to take the utmost care in the countryside.

He said: "The key issues over the next few days are sunshine, warm air temperatures, low humidity and moderate to strong winds. 

“Dead grass, leaves, twigs and heather on the ground will dry quite quickly in these conditions and when ignited can burn very fast with extreme fire intensity.

"Please exercise caution outdoors to avoid fires breaking out and think twice before using anything involving a naked flame."
