Trains in South Ayrshire are still under threat, with Scotrail proposing to reduce journeys between Girvan and Stranraer.

The changes could see 300 trips on quiet routes cut, but Transport Scotland say around an extra 100 services will be run across the network.

The plans are out to consultation now and the public have until October 1 to comment.

Colin Smyth, the Labour MSP for South Scotland, slammed the transport minister in Holyrood last week for undermining “our journey to net-zero and efforts to urge people to get back on public transport.”

Colin Smyth raised the issue with Graeme Dey in the Scottish Parliament on Wednesday last week.

Dey claimed the number of services would increase, however, Smyth says this is not the case when compared to pre-pandemic levels.

In parliament, Smyth said: “I’m sure that the minister does not want to mislead people by implying that the overall number of services will not be reduced compared to the pre-pandemic level, because that is exactly what the proposals are about.

“Frankly, we will not get people back on our trains by taking their train away.

“I ask the minister this specifically: will the Scottish National Party-Green Government rule out reducing the overall number of rail services compared to pre-pandemic levels when that new timetable is introduced?”

A spokesperson for Transport Scotland told the Advertiser: “ScotRail is not planning to reduce current services.

“They currently operate around 2000 services per day and the proposal is to increase this by around 100 per day.”
