AYR’S Santa has gone virtual this year by spreading festive joy to young and old through online videos.

It might be a year of coronavirus, lockdowns, restrictions changing by the day but for Billy Herd Santa Claus is still coming to town.

The festive mission has not been without obstacles, with Billy still trying to get out for a few public appearances.

A gig booked at Prestwick café Rest Ashore next to Kidz Play was cancelled just days before Santa was set for a socially distanced meet.

An appearance in Prestwick organised by the Rotary also fell through but Billy was not going to let that stop him as he stepped into the world of “vlogging” this year.

Special messages have been videoed and sent to the kids at Rest Ashore after the axed event and for brave children who visit Whiteleys Retreat.

Billy told the Advertiser: “This has been a bit different this year but COVID was never going to stop Santa making an appearance. It was disappointing that I couldn’t do Rest Ashore for the kids, but we have to stick to the guidelines and keep everyone safe.

“So, I managed to do a wee video to say sorry it didn’t happen and wish everyone a Merry Christmas.”

Billy, 78, who is a trustee and huge supporter for Whiteleys was able to pay a special visit as Santa last week.

He added: “We filmed some messages for the families at Whiteleys at their retreat in Alloway which was great as it had the tree in the background.

“It was great to get back there after so long to see all the amazing work they have done there.”

Billy is used to strange Christmas experiences after being rushed to hospital dressed as Santa in 2017, with what turned out to be fluid in his lungs.

After being treated and diagnosed with COPD by a doctor called Gabriel in bizarre circumstances,’ Billy is helping other patients of lung conditions this year whilst dressed as Santa.

He said: “I’m a member of the dare to sing group for people with lung problems and I’m doing some Zooms for them dressed as Santa.

“I’m also doing a Zoom for the Parkinson’s Group

“It shows Santa isn’t just for the children, it brings that Christmas magic to everyone. It lights them up that’s what its all about.”
