A TROON dad hopes his house will shine a light on suicide as part of this year’s Christmas Light Trail.
Ian Knight, 30, has pulled out all the stops to have the brightest house in a bid to spread some joy and raise awareness of a mental health charity set up by a Troon mum who tragically lost her teen daughter in 2013.
Beautiful Inside and Out was launched to help teenagers and support those who have lost a loved one to suicide after Pauline Moriarty’s daughter Jenna died when she was just 13-years-old.
In support of the charity, Ian kicked off the Christmas Light Trail early by turning on his lights on Wednesday, November 25 on what would have been Jenna’s 21st birthday.
And for those passing by to catch a glimpse of the stunning lights he is raising money for the charity via a QR code scanner on his fence and an online fundraising page.
Ian told the Advertiser: “My house is always lit up on Johnston Drive. I do it every year and each year I add to it to make it bigger.
“I don’t think any other house in Troon is as bright as mine.
“The idea is to bring some Christmas cheer especially this year, after a tough a tough time for the community with the impact of coronavirus.
“This year I am trying to raise a bit of money for charity.
“Because I do the lights every year, I thought it could be an opportunity to do some good, and Beautiful Inside and Out have had a lot of fundraisers cancelled. They do a lot to help in the community, they are a suicide charity and have a helpline.”
“Suicide touches everybody, I’ve known people who have committed suicide. The lights attract a lot of folk and it is raising awareness to their charity.”
Ian spent four days out in the wind and rain getting his display ready to shine.
This year Ian is helping Campbell Malone who is organising the annual trail from New Zealand after being unable to travel home due to coronavirus restrictions.
He hopes the lights can bring some joy to Troon and will be watching from afar.
Campbell said: “I feel really sad about missing out and meeting all my friends and family up in Troon.
“I think this year the lights are needed more than ever, it has been difficult but hopefully from putting all the pictures online we can spread joy, happiness and positivity.”
On Saturday, November 28 the big switch on took place.
