AYR'S Sea Cadets have revealed the latest improvement work that's been carried out on their new base in the town.

The group moved into Foresters Hall in September 2023, after being left "homeless and barely afloat" following the Covid pandemic.

However, the group has been thriving ever since being able to make the move to their new base, and have continued to do so in 2024.

This month, further work was completed at the hall where a fully accessible toilet has now been installed.

The new facility, created from a former cupboard, means the unit can now be more inclusive for disabled cadets, staff and visitors.

Long on the unit's wish list, the accessible toilet was made a reality thanks to a £10,000 grant from the National Lottery Awards For All scheme.

The work was completed by local firm William Kennedy Plumbers Ltd, of Ayr and the troop are delighted this facility will now be available.

Lieutenant Duncan McKechnie RNR, the unit's commanding officer, said: "We are very grateful to the National Lottery Awards For All, making this valuable facility possible with their grant.

"The spare cupboard space was converted and this makes the hall much more accessible to all users as well as any cadets who may need it."

The news comes in time for the unit's summer recruitment drive, with youngsters aged 10 to 18 urged to join in a host of exciting and fun activities on water and land.

Sailing, powerboating, windsurfing, paddleboarding, rowing and even weather forecasting are just some of the training events offered.

Cadets also get the chance to specialise in canoeing, first aid, orienteering, camping, weapon handling and shooting.

Ayr Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets meet in Foresters Hall at 46 New Road, Ayr KA8 8EX on Tuesdays between 7pm and 9.30pm.
