Last month I went along to the launch event for the South Ayrshire Disability Access Panel at the Cutty Sark Centre in Ayr.

This new panel is joint venture by Disability Equality Scotland and Voluntary Action South Ayrshire (VASA) - with the aim to revolutionise accessibility across South Ayrshire and create a community inclusive to all.

The panel is made up of local volunteers who have first-hand experience of what it’s like to navigate across the region with a disability.

One area of focus for the panel, that I have seen first-hand, is to improve the quality of the pavements and roads across Ayr, Prestwick and Troon.

On a visit to Prestwick with Ayrshire Roads Alliance recently I heard of their plans to upgrade and improve certain pavements making it an easier experience for all pedestrians – including wheelchair users and those who use walking aids.

Become a befriender

I recently visited Bfriend South Ayrshire to discuss the amazing work they do to support children and young people across the region.

The charity offers a befriending service across the region to youngsters who maybe socially isolated or who have social or emotional difficulties. At present they support 50 young people aged between 8 and 18 years old - providing one to one befriending and group activities.

As befrienders they aim to reduce the social isolation of young people, increasing their confidence and self-esteem, ensuring they feel valued and included.

The group needs more volunteers. Those who give up their time are asked to commit to a few hours every fortnight. This is certainly a rewarding way to make a positive impact on a young person’s life.

Surgeries

In my role as MSP, I am honoured to represent the constituents of Ayr, Prestwick and Troon. My duties as MSP allows me the opportunity to meet with you all and discuss any issues you may be facing.

Surgeries provide the perfect opportunity to discuss issues within the constituency and it allows me to gain a better understanding of the problems people currently facing.

Surgeries are held every Friday and need to be booked in advance.
