Shocking drone pictures show the aftermath of the explosion in the Kincaidston housing estate which damaged four houses and caused four people to be hospitalised.
Two houses appeared to have been completely destroyed in the blast while debris was strewn around the surrounding area in Gorse Park.
The roof of a neighbouring house appeared to have caved in, with emergency services remaining on the scene this morning (Tuesday, October 19).
The blast happened at around 7.10pm yesterday (Monday) with the cause being investigated.
Neighbouring homes have been evacuated and centres have been set up to support displaced families.
Two children and two adults were taken to Crosshouse Hospital.
A spokesman for Police Scotland said: "Around 7.10pm on Monday, 18 October, emergency services were called to a report of an explosion on Gorse Park, Ayr.
"Four houses have been affected by the explosion.
"Two adults and two children have been taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock.
"A number of premises have been evacuated and two local rest centres have been set up to assist.
"Emergency services are currently at the scene working with other agencies.
"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of the explosion.
"Local road closures are in place and we would advise people to avoid the area at the present time."
